What is a neuroma?

A neuroma refers to benign growth of nerve tissue that typically occurs between your third and fourth toes. A neuroma causes the tissue near your nerve to thicken, resulting in burning pain, tingling, and numbness. Neuromas can cause pain between your toes as well as in the ball of your foot.

Many people compare the pain caused by neuromas to having a stone stuck in the bottom of your shoe.

What causes a neuroma?

The exact cause of a neuroma isn’t always clear. Neuromas typically develop in response to pressure or irritation to the nerves near your toes. Certain factors can increase your chances of developing a neuroma like wearing high heels or ill-fitting shoes, or experiencing injuries or repetitive trauma from activities like running or playing basketball.

Having a foot deformity like bunions, hammertoe, or flat feet can also increase your chances of developing a neuroma.

When should I see a doctor about a neuroma?

Without proper treatment, the pain caused by your neuroma can continue to worsen. If you notice symptoms lasting longer than a few days, book an appointment with Dr. Ratcliff. He offers timely diagnostics and can determine the most effective way to relieve your pain.

How are neuromas treated?

Before recommending treatment, Dr. Ratcliff begins with a thorough evaluation. In addition to a physical exam, Dr. Ratcliff may perform imaging tests like an X-ray or ultrasound to properly diagnose your condition.

Typically, treatment for neuromas begins with conservative options like footwear changes, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication, or orthotics. Custom orthotics are an effective way to address painful neuromas by relieving pressure on the affected nerve.

Reducing activities like running, jogging, or playing high-impact sports can also help relieve your pain.

Dr. Ratcliff also offers alcohol sclerosis injections, a nonsurgical treatment that can eliminate your pain and prevent the neuroma from growing. In some cases, Dr. Ratcliff may recommend surgery to decompress or remove the affected nerve.

Dr. Ratcliff offers personalized care and works with you to determine the right solution for you. To find out which treatment is right for your condition, book your appointment by phone or online today.
